Ranchi was the center of the Jharkhand movement, which required a separate tribal region of South Bihar, north of Orissa, west of West Bengal and a region east of present-day Chhattisgarh. Jharkhand District was established on 15 November 2000 by recording the Bihar stages of Chota Nagpur and Indian cities to be developed as a smart city under PM Narendra Modi's CEO Smart Cities Mission. In British times, the city was the summer capital of Bihar, due to its mild climate during the winter. Ranchi is also one of the oldest cities in Jharkhand.
