Welcome to Jharkhand This region has been inhabited since the Stone Age. [1] Chalcolithic bronze tools have been found. This area dates back to the Iron Age during the second millennium BCE. The region came under the control of the Maurya Empire and later (17th century) was conquered by the Mughal kings Akbar. With the decline of Mughal, the region came under the domination of local rulers from Chero caste and others, before being conquered by the British East India Company in the late 18th century, followed by the British Raj from the middle of the 19th century. . By this time the territory was covered by nine major circuits. Under the Raj, until 1905, the region fell within the Presidency of Bengal, most of which were then transferred to the central provinces and to the Orissa Tributary States; and in 1936 the entire region was assigned to the Eastern States Agency.
